President's Corner
May 2012

April proved to be a very busy month. Aside from our regular meeting on the, first Friday of the month, followed by a Board Meeting, the Pride of Portland Award was given to Friends of Trees the morning of April 19. Lions Wally Watkins and John Nesbitt accompanied me to City Hall for this presentation. The award was presented at an Urban Forestry commission meeting with about thirty people in attendance. The Friends of Trees immediately said this award would be shown in a prominent place at their offices.

The next day, April 20, we held our annual meeting to elect officers and vote on revisions to the club bylaws. Officers for 2012-2013 are President: Lion Garry Lienhard, 1st Vice President: Lion Cheryl Sheppard, 2nd Vice President: Lion Bev Swanson, Secretary: Lion John Nesbitt, Treasurer: Lion Dave Johnson, Board Members: 1 year: Lion Diana Richardson; Lion Fama Partlow, 2 year: Lion Sunny Pulley, ID [soon to be PID]; Lion Ron Owens. I am pleased with the slate of incoming officers and know that Lion Garry will provide outstanding leadership.

On April 21, the celebration of 90 years of Lionism banquet of the Portland Downtown Lions. The committee, chaired by Lion Diana Richardson, with the able assistance of Lions Janet Hasson, Bill and Nita Rollins, Garry Lienhard and Sunny Pulley put together a beautiful evening. Lion Joe Preston, PID, from Arizona, was our keynote speaker and as Lion Fama mentioned, did not lack enthusiasm! He, indeed, did give an inspiring talk. We were privileged to have him as our guest of honor. Thank you, Lion Sunny for suggesting him as our guest speaker. Lion Wayne Baseden presented the history of our club while Janet Hasson ably handled the duties as master of ceremonies.

Here we now are into the merry month of May! At our first meeting of the month, our guest speaker was Brian Kelly, from the FBI Gang Task Force. He gave a most interesting talk. Next meeting is May 18 with the program provided by Friends of Trees. This organization has helped immensely in educating and providing assistance with tree planting across the entire Metro area, making our city a more beautiful place. Please plan to attend and learn more of their work.

Lastly, but certainly by no means least, the Rose Festival Princess Luncheon, Thursday, May 31st at the Lloyd Center Doubletree. This is a premier event! Lion Diana Richardson is chair. See or call her for details. Reservations are still available and registration forms are available at the club meeting or on line at www.portlandlions.org.
